Self-love is attained by embodying the language of the heart; the language of love, peace, appreciation, gratitude, joy, compassion, kindness, affection, and acceptance. The beauty of this is that it is actually the Truth, the essence, of who you are. You are naturally joyful, peaceful and compassionate! Being able to truly embody this energy, know to the core of you that this is who you are, presents the greatest challenge. The question you need to ask yourself is, “Am I willing to join in relationship with the heart and let it create miracles for me? Am I willing to know and live my Truth?”
Embodying the language of the heart becomes so challenging because we have all learned to identify with our personalities or our ego mind– the judgments, resentments, guilt, fears and the long list of “not good enoughs”. This is not the Truth of who you are! It is conditioning, conditioning that can be undone. Choose to stop identifying with the ego mind and start listening to the heart. The heart knows only love, so it also extends love to the ego mind transforming these untruths into Truth. The heart heals, this is the miracle.
Self-love is an inner process, then, where you allow your heart to lead, not your physical heart, but a place right below the heart, the center or core of you. It is here where you connect to the Truth, your essence, your innate intelligence and wisdom.
Can you love it all unconditionally?
Choosing self-love means to embrace everything, even the warts! So let’s take a look at how you can let go of judgment and extend acceptance to those things that don’t seem so lovable. Something I’m finding very useful in my life is to be completely honest with myself and speak out my self-talk instead of keeping it silent. I pay close attention to my body and if it feels heavy or tense I give it a voice. I might say, “I’m feeling unworthy right now.” Or “I hate my wrinkles!” Or “I’m really afraid I’m going to fail at this.” Accept who you are in the moment and don’t “stuff it” because it doesn’t sound good or you think it’s not spiritual to be “negative”. It is spiritual to be accepting. (In most situations this technique is best used by yourself or with people with whom you feel safe.) Speaking out the truth is very powerful and allows what is hidden to become conscious; what is conscious can be healed. You are human after all and this is all part of having a personality that reacts to what’s happening around you.
Healing with the heart
Shining the light on the darkness makes the darkness disappear. Take the darkness, the “warts”, to the heart and they will be healed with the energy of love. The moment you allow the heart to transform your perception of the “warts” with its love, compassion, peace and acceptance you have created a miracle.
A beautiful technique that I use often is the “heart ease” technique developed by the Institute of Heartmath.
The moment signs of stress appear or you are feeling shut down speak your truth out loud. Then place your hand over your heart area, close your eyes and breathe gently and smoothly in and out as though you were breathing right from the heart. Imagine that you are breathing in peace, ease, balance and compassion from your heart. Something I add to this is to imagine that whatever the tension or heaviness is, it’s being dissolved into dust by a bright light from the heart. Or I imagine just extending love, peace or compassion to it. When you have reached a place of peacefulness make a heartfelt commitment to anchor and maintain this state of peacefulness. Then return to your activity.
This technique is so simple and powerful you can use it anywhere. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes.
Self love is about life living through you, not life happening to you
Life is always giving you opportunities to awaken to your true nature. Releasing and healing emotions is one of them. Know that emotions, energy in motion, don’t come to stay they come to pass through. Begin to see them as neutral and recognize that they are a signal for something within you, not outside of you, to be healed and released. Be honest, ask, “What is it about my reaction to this situation that might be calling for me to heal something within myself?” Then give it to your heart for a miracle.
The gift
When you embody the language of the heart you give the beautiful gift of unconditional love to yourself. Your heart opens even wider allowing you to love others unconditionally. Ultimately this opens you to experiencing the rich, full, joyful life that you deserve. Now that’s a miracle!
